In our society today, elderly people are often put away, not given the respect they deserve as elders, and are out of view of most people. This has made many people uncomfortable with the elderly, and therefore often view them as gross, scary, and out of their minds, completely pushing aside the fact that they are still people with stories to tell, and feelings, and wants, and needs--their body has just grown old around them.
I feel that elderly people today are widely misunderstood by a large amount of today's young people.Not only does Abuelos help expose students of all ages to the elderly, but it also offers a way for the residents of the Four Corners Health Care Center to be with children, when they may not be visited often, or have no grandchildren. The link between the old and young is a precious one, indeed.

I help coach the youngest age group, the J5's and J6's along with Sarah Tescher, the main coach, (at right.) Mostly, we just scoot around on our skiis, playing in the snow, learning some new tricks like how to go down super steep downhills, hockey stops, corner-stepping...we do relays, too. It's super fun. I get to ski, be with kids, be outside, and watch the moon rise... amazing. The Nordic Ski Team gets more serious as you get older, but for now, it's mostly just to get kids excited and having fun skiing. Some take it more seriously, and are more competetive, than others.
The little ones practice Tuesdays and Thursdays, and there's usually a Coke Race on Saturday.
